Nestled in the northeastern part of Phuket, the village of Bang Rong showcases another side of Thailand’s largest island.

Led by local women,  Bang Rong CBT integrates environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and community development. Community-based tourism (CBT) is a sustainable travel initiative managed and owned by local communities, designed to benefit the community. This approach to responsible tourism emphasises cultural preservation, environmental care, and social sustainability. CBT in Thailand offers numerous mutual benefits. Welcome to Bang Rong

Bang Rong, a peaceful village surrounded by mangroves and lush greenery, is predominantly inhabited by Muslim communities that have lived there for generations. The villagers are deeply connected to their environment, relying on the sea, mangroves, and nearby plantations for their livelihood. 

Community-based tourism was introduced to Bang Rong in 2001 to provide visitors with meaningful cultural experiences while supporting the local economy and safeguarding the environment. The community’s welcoming spirit and commitment to sustainable tourism have earned Bang Rong a reputation as a must-visit destination for eco-conscious travellers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Tourism revenues are distributed among community members, ensuring economic benefits are shared equitably. Visitors to Bang Rong who purchase handmade crafts, participate in local tours, or dine at community-run eateries, directly contribute to the livelihoods of Bang Rong residents.

Responsible Thailand Award winner

The achievements of the Bang Rong community have been recognised in the Responsible Thailand Awards. In 2024, Bang Rong Community-Based Tourism was a worthy winner in the Responsible Community Tourism category. With a focus on local cuisine, ecotourism, and organic products, the village showcases a successful community-based tourism model. Bang Rong followed that up in 2025 by winning the Responsible Thailand Award in the Responsible Conservation category.

The judges described Bang Rong as “an outstanding example of community-driven tourism” and also commended Bang Rong CBT for their support of the local economy with 10% of tourism profits reinvested into community projects such as education, healthcare, and environmental protection. 

Promoting local culture

Bang Rong CBT allocates parts of tourism profits to community initiatives, including support for local football teams, hospitals, mosques, and assistance programs for the elderly. To celebrate and preserve Bang Rong’s rich Muslim heritage, cultural elements are incorporated into the tourism offerings. The promotion of traditional batik production techniques is one shining example of this cultural heritage.

The CBT initiative invests in the next generation by offering training courses for young community members, equipping them with skills in English, hospitality, cooking, and sustainable practices to prepare them as future leaders in tourism. As a learning hub, Bang Rong welcomes students from primary school to university, providing hands-on experience in tourism and agricultural activities to nurture their practical knowledge and skills.

Empowering women

Bang Rong advocates for gender equality and women’s empowerment by providing training programs and creating opportunities for marginalised women to actively contribute to the development of community-based tourism (CBT). In their daily operations, Bang Rong CBT promotes positive messages on gender equality, respect for local culture, and the rejection of harmful behaviours.

By 2025, Bang Rong CBT aims to have at least 50% of its leadership positions in our tourism initiatives held by women, with a focus on providing ongoing training in digital skills, financial management, and hospitality.

Supporting sustainability 

Bang Rong adheres to sustainable ecotourism principles which include a focus on energy conservation, reducing emissions, supporting organic agriculture, and minimising plastic use. 

The community knows how important it is to respect nature and it is a message they teach not just to the younger generation in the community, but also to visiting tourists.  One example is the way the community uses pineapples which are not only eaten but also used for organic cosmetics. Nothing goes to waste with the discarded pineapple shells recycled into high-quality fabrics for clothing and handicrafts. Organic pesticides are another eco-friendly by-product of pineapple waste.

Explore the mangroves

Bang Rong is known for its sprawling mangrove forests, which serve as a natural barrier against coastal erosion and a vital habitat for diverse wildlife. Visitors can embark on guided boat tours through the mangroves, where they’ll encounter an array of bird species, crabs, and even mudskippers. Mangrove replanting initiatives and educational programs are at the heart of Bang Rong’s environmental efforts and if you visit you have the opportunity to join locals in planting young mangroves and make a positive impact during your stay.

Homestays 

For travellers seeking a more immersive experience, Bang Rong’s homestay program offers a unique opportunity to live with local families. Staying in traditional houses, guests can observe and participate in daily activities such as fishing, cooking, or farming.

The interaction goes beyond surface-level hospitality. Visitors learn about the community’s customs, such as traditional dress, Islamic practices, and unique celebrations. It’s a rare chance to form genuine connections and understand the nuances of local life.

Culinary experiences

Food enthusiasts will find themselves at home in Bang Rong. The community takes pride in offering farm-to-table meals made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Seafood lovers can savour dishes prepared with the day’s catch, while vegetarians can indulge in meals highlighting fresh produce from local gardens.

Participating in cooking classes is another highlight. Visitors can learn to make signature dishes such as gaeng som pla (spicy-sour fish curry) or khanom jeen (fermented rice noodles with curry), guided by community elders who are eager to share their culinary heritage.

Kayaking adventures

For those who prefer a more active exploration of Bang Rong’s natural beauty, kayaking through the mangrove-lined waterways is an exhilarating option. Paddling through narrow channels, visitors can enjoy close-up views of flora and fauna, all while soaking in the tranquillity of the surroundings. Kayaking also provides an eco-friendly way to explore areas that motorised boats cannot access, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint.

Wildlife and conservation 

Bang Rong is home to an array of wildlife, including monkeys, otters, and various bird species. A visit to the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, located nearby, complements the community’s conservation ethos. Here, visitors can learn about efforts to rescue and rehabilitate gibbons that were previously held in captivity or exploited for tourism.

Bang Rong is located approximately 25 kilometres from Phuket Town and 20 kilometres from Phuket International Airport.

Bang Rong CBT can be visited all year round, but for some outdoor activities like kayaking and mangrove tours, the dry season (November to April) is ideal. Whatever time of year you visit, pack comfortable clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. Visitors should also dress modestly to respect local customs.
