Tumlungwahn Community Enterprise, Suphan Buri

When tourists consider where to visit on a day trip from Bangkok, Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi are often the first destinations that come to mind. But just a short distance away is the province of Suphan Buri. While Suphan Buri lacks the historic temples of Ayutthaya and the famous attractions found in neighbouring Kanchanaburi, this is a location where travellers can discover Thailand beyond the main tourist trail. And there is no better example of that than Tumlungwahn Community Enterprise.

Winner of the Responsible Thailand Awards 2025 (Responsible Community Tourism category), Tumlungwahn Community Enterprise is an excellent example of community-based tourism. With all activities designed and led by community residents, visitors can be assured of authentic experiences while the community benefits from fair income distribution.

Welcome to Tumlungwahn

Founded in 2018, Tumlungwahn Community Enterprise is a collective of residents who came together with a shared goal: to protect their cultural heritage while creating new economic opportunities at home.

Rather than chasing mass tourism, the group focuses on small-scale, low-impact experiences that reflect rural life in Suphan Buri. Everything visitors encounter here is community-designed, community-run, and community-owned.

Working with the community

Tumlungwahn is a powerful example of how tourism can work with communities rather than around them. This collaboration means that economic benefits stay local. Income generated through tourism is shared among participating households, helping diversify livelihoods beyond farming alone. Beyond the tangible economic benefits, cultural heritage is actively preserved.

Activities at Tumlungwahn

At its heart, Tumlungwahn is about learning through participation. Visitors aren’t spectators, but instead are welcomed as temporary members of village life. Activities are designed to be both tourist experiences and income generators for local households, ensuring that economic benefits stay within the community.

When you visit Tumlungwahn, you can enjoy a range of experiences. To ensure authenticity and personal connection, community members lead each activity. These vary seasonally but often include:

Traditional Thai food
Visitors can not only try local dishes, but also learn how to prepare them using recipes passed down through generations.

Hands-on workshops
Try our hand at weaving, craft-making, or producing traditional rice noodles. These interactive demonstrations highlight skills of the local artisans.

Cultural storytelling
Interpretive walking tours connect visitors to community stories, agricultural practices, and creative crafts.

Responsible Thailand Awards
Tumlungwahn’s thoughtful approach hasn’t gone unnoticed. The enterprise was the winner of the Responsible Thailand Awards 2025 in the Responsible Community Tourism category. Tumlungwahn also gained recognition as an outstanding attraction in the 2025 Thailand Tourism Sustainability Awards.

By promoting traditional crafts and preserving heritage, Tumlungwahn is building community pride and is showing how local communities can be a force for good in the tourist industry.
